I ran FurMark and saw that my GPU goes up to about 75c while having clockspeeds around it should be sticking around then when it hits 75 drops clock speeds to until about 68c then hits and goes up again does this all in about 1 second. Also, I'm using the thunderbot 3 workstation dock with a wide x resolution monitor if that matters.

With World of Warcraft, it runs fine for an undetermined amount of time perhaps an hourthen the framrate drops from 's to like 10 and becomes very jerky. Restarting the program doesn't help; only way to "fix" it is a full restart of the system.

I installed Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to monitor what's going on, and there is pretty constant power limit throttling going on even when the temps are around deg C. So two questions: 1 Any idea what could be causing the drops in the game? Now what I am curious about! Thanks for these posts. I got my P53 around the same time as you did and I'm also having crazy cpu spikes which I'm thinking is having to do with temp throttling as it seems to mirror when the temperature reaches 70C and above.

I'm running audio based programs and synthesizers and so far the unit is performing far worse than my 6 year old xeon processor when it comes to CPU intensive synthesizers. I've tried a lot of different bios settings to no avail, but will also try yours in hopes that it could help. I'll keep you guys updated, but I have another week before my return can be accepted and I may very well return the laptop which would be a huge bummer as I'd love for it to work.

Please me me know if you guys come across any other solutions for CPU intensive work. I called Lenovo support I have premiereand I explain to the tech the issue.

I will keep you updated guys with anything new. Some threads seem to point that there could be communication issues between the two GPUs and that slow things down. The comm issue should be non-existent, so some see better graphics performance. Of course, that should NOT have much influence to the problem you are encountering.

I think running your workloads with the Intel eXtreme Tuning Utility monitor running like some of you have already done would help in determining what kind of throttling it is, and monitor the discrete GPU parameters too.

RX 5700XT Temperatures and throttle points, is this for real?

Of those three, I think only the Thermal throttling depends on the Lenovo designs, with the addition of the external Motherboard VR Thermal throttling.

If I'm wrong, let me know! Reading CPU datasheets is pretty complex and quite boring. Remember the wattage of the power adapter supplied with your machine.

If none of the components stay in the "danger zone" of over-heating, the Embedded Controller monitors temperatures and controls the fans and BIOS can allow more heat to be generated more speed. The fans will run at high intensity. Unfortunately, if one device is about to overheat, the whole system has to limit it's heat generation as the cooling systems are shared, and the heat from one device warms the other ones on the same branch.

Heat is equalized through the system while it is dissipated outwards. My P52 has a "Intelligent cooling" setting.

Also, check that Airplane power mode setting. Sometimes, it kicks ON erroneously and the laptop stops charging. If you have a repeatable testing scenario or simply annoyed at this issue! However, if you have a hardware issue like mis-applied thermal interface material, someone should fix it under warranty. In any case pun! Thank you very much.

Once the thermal throttling comes into play, the component will start slowing down its performance in order to reach a temperature bracket in which the thermal throttling is eliminated.

If you are wondering whether or not thermal throttling is dangerous, it most certainly is, because your component is running at a temperature which is certainly not safe for it, and longer operations at this temperature can decrease the lifespan of your component, and can potentially kill it as well. In this article, we will be looking at thermal throttling in-depth, as well as ways that can help us eliminate thermal throttling. This means that both the frequencies, as well as the raw performance frame rates are going to get dropped.

As far as how drastic the drop is going to be, that honestly depends on the hardware and how severe the thermal throttling is. Because there are times when thermal throttling gets really, really severe. This simply results in the lifespan of your graphics card or your CPU reduced drastically, which is never a good thing to happen.

Now the main question is how you can prevent thermal throttling from happening in the first place. The answer to that is rather simple, however, there are multiple ways you can actually get rid of it.

The first thing that I normally suggest everyone to do whenever it comes to dealing with temperature is that they should install the appropriate cooling. Now I know it might sound like a superficial thing but that is not the case. If your PC case has appropriate coolingthen you should never run into any issue like that.

Furthermore, you need to install fans that are made out of good quality and make sure that you have positive pressure maintained inside the case. Positive pressure can be achieved by having equal intake and equal exhaust, or a higher number of intake and lower number of exhaust fans. However, do keep in mind that if you try to do something like that on your GPU, you will void the warranty, whereas doing something like this on a processor does not do anything like that.

For the best thermal compoundsyou can check out Thermal Grizzly, as well as Noctua. I know this might not make sense to many, but modern processors do need a good cooling solution.

So, yes, that is another determinant in thermal throttling that you must know about. The good thing is that you do not need to spend a lot of money either. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Notify me of follow-up comments by email.

Use throttling analysis to identify performance issues that result from the CPU operating at temperatures above thermal and power limits. A preview feature may or may not appear in a future production release.

It is available for your use in the hopes that you will provide feedback on its usefulness and help determine its future. Data collected with a preview feature is not guaranteed to be backward compatible with future releases.

Please send your feedback to parallel. When you observe an unexpected drop in system performance or a degradation when the system is not overloaded, your system may be displaying throttling behavior. Throttling describes a drop in operating frequency as the system responds to a breach of safe operating power and temperature limits to prevent a catastrophic event like a thermally induced shutdown.

For example, if the operating temperature of the CPU exceeds the thermal limits specified, the frequency drops from the peak value to a lower level in order to allow the system to cool down. Once this has happened, the CPU needs to ramp up its frequency to the peak value sustained previously.

What's Thermal Throttling and How to Prevent It

This phase is the throttling phase where the CPU slows down initially and ramps up eventually. The drop in frequency to restore safe CPU operating temperature can result in significant performance loss. Unfortunately, throttling is an unavoidable occurrence. The performance of a CPU is ultimately governed by power consumption which is turn determined by how quickly a system can cool down.

Since the thermal algorithms of an OS govern the violation of thermal limits, you cannot alter your application to prevent the system from throttling. Throttling is a performance issue that is caused by power supplied to the system. Run throttling analysis when you observe a slowdown in performance in one of these situations:.

When the analysis completes, check the Summary window to see if throttling was observed. Under each type of throttling, you can see the number of instances for each profiled entity. See the Correlated Metrics tab for a graphical representation of this information. In this example, running the system power at peak performance has caused CPU frequency to exceed maximum turbo frequency. For a more detailed analysis, see individual tabs for each type of throttling and understand the reasons that caused each instance.

In the throttling count table, you can see all of the sources for throttling that are covered by the analysis.

The Reason column indicates the number of sampling points where throttling occurred, as well as the reason causing it. The Not Reason column displays the count of sample points where throttling did not occur.

Frequency has exceeded the OS frequency due to turbo transition attenuation. This can cause performance degradation due to frequent changes in operating ratio. Share Tweet Share Send. Page 1 of 2 1 2 Last Jump to page: Results 1 to 10 of To begin with, the laptop used to overheat dramatically, with the CPU going to 95C. I switched off Turbo Boost using a quick registry change and this brought down the CPU temps to around With Fan Boost set to the default systemI ran a succession of unigine valley benchmarks. The scores were as follows - ,, A trace from HWINFO suggests that the GPU temperature is being maintained to around 80C, with the card clocking down to base frequency as the benchmarks progress.

At this point, I thought I had more or less solved my throttling problem. What can I do about this throttling? If it can't do that, isn't this something remiss from ASUS's side? What can I do to get to optimal performance? Feel free to contact me if u need further info about it.

You know what? Thank you for replying to the thread. In fact, I had already figured out your replies, but this prompted me to write it up properly. Sometimes, this setting will rest itself at boot.

We will just be able to stay within the thermal limits without doing so. This is a bit suspect - It helps, but will it cause the fan to fail? From my knowledge of electronics, I'd guess not, but would anyone like to comment? This opens the voltage-frequency curve. The only downside is the configuration is not persistent and I have to do this manually after every system boot. Go to Solution. Thank you very much for explaining this in detail! I then realized that maybe a CMOS reset could fix the issue, so I followed an instruction of resetting HW without having to unplug the button battery which is on the keyboard side of the motherboard.

I did a second unplugging power cord, unplugging the battery for 30 seconds, removed the RAMs for 30 seconds, pressing the power button for 30 seconds. Then I put the RAMs back and reconnected the battery. Then I unplugged the battery, reconnected the RAMs, and connected the power cable, it boots up this way.

Then I unplugged the power cable and reconnected the battery, it powers on fine. I am not sure if the CMOS reset has fix the problem or if the procedure works for other dell laptops, but anyone who still has the problem can try it out. View solution in original post. Be careful taking off the heatsink as it's VERY fragile and bends easily! Don't ask how i know! If your not that brave then look at a Aluminium Laptop cooler, i found that worked well on my old !

Hi, my laptop same model has had the exact same problem as of yesterday. If you find a solution could you please update here. Thank you!! A HQ should be running at MHz when loaded. No surprise that your laptop feels slow and sluggish with it being locked to MHz. This stands for bi-directional processor hot.

GPU CLOCK throttling even with good temps.

It is a signal path to the CPU. It allows other sensors within your computer to send throttling signals directly to your CPU. When one of these sensors goes bad, it will continuously send a throttling signal to your CPU regardless of its temperature.

It will be a challenge finding someone at Dell that fully understands this problem. The sensor that has gone bad might be in your power adapter or it might be on your motherboard.

Is Your Gaming Laptop Throttling? How to Know and (hopefully) Fix it!

All a tech can do is replace parts until the problem goes away. ThrottleStop is the only software available that allows you to access this setting. You can easily add ThrottleStop to your Windows start up sequence and you can disable the system tray icon if you do not want or need to look at it. Problem solved. I also recommend that you use ThrottleStop to enable Speed Shift. After that, you should see SST in green on the main screen. An EPP setting of 0 is equivalent to maximum performance which is a good setting when plugged in.

A setting of 80 is similar to the Windows Balanced power profile. What sort of better solution are you looking for? ThrottleStop is free. It properly reports what the problem is and provides you with a simple way to fix this problem. Any other options you find are either going to be a big hassle or way more expensive.
