With World of Warcraft, it runs fine for an undetermined amount of time perhaps an hourthen the framrate drops from 's to like 10 and becomes very jerky. Restarting the program doesn't help; only way to "fix" it is a full restart of the system.
I installed Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to monitor what's going on, and there is pretty constant power limit throttling going on even when the temps are around deg C. I'm running audio based programs and synthesizers and so far the unit is performing far worse than my 6 year old xeon processor when it comes to CPU intensive synthesizers. I've tried a lot of different bios settings to no avail, but will also try yours in hopes that it could help. I'll keep you guys updated, but I have another week before my return can be accepted and I may very well return the laptop which would be a huge bummer as I'd love for it to work.
Please me me know if you guys come across any other solutions for CPU intensive work. I called Lenovo support I have premiereand I explain to the tech the issue.
I will keep you updated guys with anything new. Some threads seem to point that there could be communication issues between the two GPUs and that slow things down. The comm issue should be non-existent, so some see better graphics performance. Of course, that should NOT have much influence to the problem you are encountering.
I think running your workloads with the Intel eXtreme Tuning Utility monitor running like some of you have already done would help in determining what kind of throttling it is, and monitor the discrete GPU parameters too.

Of those three, I think only the Thermal throttling depends on the Lenovo designs, with the addition of the external Motherboard VR Thermal throttling.

Please send your feedback to parallel. When you observe an unexpected drop in system performance or a degradation when the system is not overloaded, your system may be displaying throttling behavior. Throttling describes a drop in operating frequency as the system responds to a breach of safe operating power and temperature limits to prevent a catastrophic event like a thermally induced shutdown.
For example, if the operating temperature of the CPU exceeds the thermal limits specified, the frequency drops from the peak value to a lower level in order to allow the system to cool down. Once this has happened, the CPU needs to ramp up its frequency to the peak value sustained previously.
What's Thermal Throttling and How to Prevent It
This phase is the throttling phase where the CPU slows down initially and ramps up eventually. The drop in frequency to restore safe CPU operating temperature can result in significant performance loss. Unfortunately, throttling is an unavoidable occurrence. The performance of a CPU is ultimately governed by power consumption which is turn determined by how quickly a system can cool down.
Since the thermal algorithms of an OS govern the violation of thermal limits, you cannot alter your application to prevent the system from throttling. Throttling is a performance issue that is caused by power supplied to the system. Run throttling analysis when you observe a slowdown in performance in one of these situations:.
When the analysis completes, check the Summary window to see if throttling was observed. Under each type of throttling, you can see the number of instances for each profiled entity. See the Correlated Metrics tab for a graphical representation of this information. In this example, running the system power at peak performance has caused CPU frequency to exceed maximum turbo frequency. For a more detailed analysis, see individual tabs for each type of throttling and understand the reasons that caused each instance.
In the throttling count table, you can see all of the sources for throttling that are covered by the analysis.

You know what? Thank you for replying to the thread. In fact, I had already figured out your replies, but this prompted me to write it up properly. Sometimes, this setting will rest itself at boot.
We will just be able to stay within the thermal limits without doing so. This is a bit suspect - It helps, but will it cause the fan to fail? I then realized that maybe a CMOS reset could fix the issue, so I followed an instruction of resetting HW without having to unplug the button battery which is on the keyboard side of the motherboard.
I did a second unplugging power cord, unplugging the battery for 30 seconds, removed the RAMs for 30 seconds, pressing the power button for 30 seconds. Then I put the RAMs back and reconnected the battery. Then I unplugged the battery, reconnected the RAMs, and connected the power cable, it boots up this way.
Then I unplugged the power cable and reconnected the battery, it powers on fine. I am not sure if the CMOS reset has fix the problem or if the procedure works for other dell laptops, but anyone who still has the problem can try it out. View solution in original post. GPU CLOCK throttling even with good temps.
It is a signal path to the CPU. It allows other sensors within your computer to send throttling signals directly to your CPU. When one of these sensors goes bad, it will continuously send a throttling signal to your CPU regardless of its temperature.

All a tech can do is replace parts until the problem goes away. ThrottleStop is the only software available that allows you to access this setting. You can easily add ThrottleStop to your Windows start up sequence and you can disable the system tray icon if you do not want or need to look at it. Problem solved. I also recommend that you use ThrottleStop to enable Speed Shift. After that, you should see SST in green on the main screen. An EPP setting of 0 is equivalent to maximum performance which is a good setting when plugged in.
A setting of 80 is similar to the Windows Balanced power profile. What sort of better solution are you looking for? ThrottleStop is free. It properly reports what the problem is and provides you with a simple way to fix this problem. Any other options you find are either going to be a big hassle or way more expensive.
